Early 1900s in Iowa. Harold Hill, a traveling con man, comes to River City, allegedly to start a children's band, even though we soon learn he can't read a lick of music. Almost everyone in town is fooled by him, except Marian, the local librarian, who's incensed that he's taking over the town. But when she sees her chronically shy, stuttering young brother Winthrop come alive when handed his cornet, she immediately falls in love with Hill and conspires to keep the truth from the town. Eventually the day of reckoning comes, and the kids must perform for their elders. They're terrible, but the parents don't care, because they are so proud to see their sons and daughters in a band. Looks like Harold is going to stay in River City for a while--with Marian. Synopsis (c) Peter Filichia
