1950s, Washington, D.C., Joe Boyd, a rabid fan of the woebegone Washington Senators baseball team, says he'll sell his soul to the devil to see his team beat the New York Yankees. Soon Mr. Applegate (the Devil) shows up to give him his wish and sends a revitalized Joe Hardy to play for the Senators. But Joe discovers that the love of his wife ha left behind is more important to him than seeing his team win the pennant. Not even Lola, Applegate's best temptress, can deter Joe from returning home, prompting Applegate to start rumors that Joe's really a banned Mexican League player.
