Teen idol Conrad Birdie is about to be drafted, so Albert Peterson--his producer-songwriter-manager--faces ruin. Albert's longtime girlfriend, Rosie, comes up with an idea for a contest: on of his fans will give Birdie "one last kiss" on The Ed Sullivan Show. The kid chosen at random is Kim McAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio, but her steady boyfriend, Hugo Peabody, is furious that she'll be kissing someone else. Albert's domineering mother, Mae, is also unhappy, worried that he'll marry Rosie, whom she doesn't like for many reasons, not the least of which is her Spanish background. Mae follows Albert and the entourage to Ohio. Also unhappy is Mr. McAfee, who is ready to prevent Kim from kissing Conrad until Albert offers him a spot on the Sullivan show. Mr. McAfee makes an idiot of himself on nationwide TV, but that's eclipsed by Hugo's rushing onstage and punching Conrad and knocking him out. Both Rosie and Kim are fed up with their men, and each bolts. Eventually, Kim and Hugo reconcile and Albert tracks down Rosie and, despite his mother's protests, marries her.
