Billy Crocker forgot his date with Reno Sweeney, the ex-evangelist turned entertainer. He claims that he had to do an errand for his boss, Mr. Whitney, who is sailing to England the next morning. Reno tells him she'll be on the same ship, but she'd have a better time if he came along. Actually, Billy is in love with someone else and plans to stay in New York and romance her. She's Hope Harcourt, but what Billy doesn't know is that she'll be on the same ship, sailing with her mother--and Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, the man she plans to marry. So when Billy goes to see his boss off, he sees Hope, and that's enough to induce him to stow away. He's not the only one who hasn't sprung for a ticket: Moonface Martin, a not-so-famous gangster disguised as a minister, and Erma, the girlfriend of his more famous gangster partner, Snake Eyes Johnson, have done the same. (Snake Eyes was supposed to come, too, but he missed the boat.) Later, Reno is delighted to find Billy--until she learns he's here for Hope, not her. But when Hope sees Bill, she's only somewhat happy to see him, for she is engaged to Lord Evelyn. What if her mother finds out? Actually, she's pretty busy, what with Mr. Whitney's finding her to his liking. Reno decides to help Billy by romancing Lord Evelyn, while Moonface will help, too, by threatening to blackmail him if he doesn't break the engagement. But then Reno becomes genuinely interested in Lord Evelyn. Now Billy tries to convince Mrs. Harcourt that Lord Evelyn is actually an escapee from a lunatic asylum. But Billy is caught by the sailors, for they think he's Public Enemy Number One. Actually, the captain is thrilled, because his boat was a little celebrity-shy, so this gives some added dash to the trip. Later, though, he admits he's only Billy Crocker, and he's brought to the brig. (So is his pal Moonface, for supporting the ruse.) There he gets a love letter from Hope, and he's buoyed. He and Moonface escape, and everyone winds up with the right person. Synopsis (c) Peter Filichia
