Welcome to HCST!

Howard County Summer Theatre (HCST) is a
non-profit organization founded in 1975 by three county residents, Elise Best, Hazel Philbrick, and Jeanne Grennon, who wanted to provide a summer theatre experience for college students.  HCST has grown over the years to now provide a venue for children thru adults who have a passion for theatre.  A portion of the profits from these shows are donated to various charities in central Maryland.

The Story:
A theater tradition, Fiddler on the Roof, tells the tale of a poor milkman, Tevye, living in the small village of Anatevka, Russia.  It’s an endearing story of a man who is striving to raise his 5 daughters and instill in them the values and norms of his Jewish culture in the midst of a changing social and political climate.  Audiences everywhere will identify with the conflict and range of emotions that Tevye struggles with as he tries to grapple with the changes while supporting and raising his children.  Based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, the show’s book is touchingly written by Joseph Stein.  The music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick will have you in turn laughing and then weeping as Tevye and his family experience both the highs and lows of living their lives.

2025 Recap
It all started as a dream of providing a summer theatre experience for college students in Howard County, and in 1975, HCST staged their first production.  Fast forward 50 years, and HCST drew back the curtain on their 49th annual production with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Through the years of believing that any dream will do, we’ve lit the stage with bright colors shining and flashes of light.  This year was no exception.  Seventy-eight high school & adult actors sang and danced along with 49 middle & elementary school students without hesitation.  In the auditorium, 4,331 audience members witnessed the journey of a dream over eight performances.  Thanks to the support of so many theatre-goers, $9700 was donated to the local organizations Prepare for Success, The Maryland Food Bank, and Luminus Network for New Americans.
On November 6, HCST celebrated 50 years of staging community shows.  What began as theatre for young adults has grown into a community of theatre lovers of all ages.  Two hundred and fifty people gathered at our Gala to celebrate the years & the people who have refused to let HCST fade into darkness.
While the world waits, the HCST Board of Directors have already begun planning for next summer when the dream will continue with Fiddler on the Roof.
